Concept

Ancient Indian history spans the Indus Valley Civilisation, the Vedic age, and the great empires of the Mauryas and Guptas. It laid the foundations of Indian culture, religion and administration.

The Gupta period is called the 'Golden Age' of India.

Key Points & Formulas

  • Indus Valley (Harappan) Civilisation: well-planned cities, drainage, the Great Bath at Mohenjodaro.
  • Vedic age: composition of the Vedas; Sanskrit; varna system.
  • Maurya Empire founded by Chandragupta Maurya (322 BCE); Ashoka spread Buddhism.
  • Gupta age: advances in mathematics (Aryabhata), astronomy and art.

Worked Example

Q. Why is the Indus Valley Civilisation also called the Harappan Civilisation?

Harappa was the first site of this civilisation to be excavated.

By convention, a civilisation is named after its first discovered site.

So it is called the Harappan Civilisation.
